Barrel Zinc Plating
Zinc is a unique metal ideal for protecting parts made from other metals. Its uniqueness is that it readily bonds to many other metals while also accepting topcoats (e.g., chromates and sealers) those metals do not. The technology of metal protection has changed dramatically since the year 2000. A zinc metal deposit is now the basis of a multi-layer protection system that provides five to ten times the protection of the best zinc-based coatings of ten years ago.Capability
National Plating’s Barrel Zinc line is a thirteen station, hoist assisted, manual plating line running 36” production barrels. We barrel plate parts up to 12" long, weighing from .005 pound up to 1 pound plus. We can handle jobs from a few ounces of parts up to production runs of 2,500 pounds. We can bake parts after plating for hydrogen imbrittlement relief. Finally, we can finish parts with clear, yellow, or black chromates, and even apply a silicated sealer as an additional layer of protection.
The line is run by an experienced plater. The plater visually assesses each barrel, and measures coating thickness using our Fischer X-ray Inspection System, before releasing the barrel for subsequent processing. Any problems found, however infrequent, are corrected on the spot.
Standards
We can certify plating to ASTM B633, various MIL Specs, or Your Company Spec. We qualify our processes in our own Salt Spray chamber so we can recommend a process that meets requirements stated in hours of salt spray protection. This is especially important because the technology of post plating coatings is changing so rapidly.
What's New?
We continue to invest in technology to remove variables from the plating process. In 2012 that is focused on controlling temperature in processing tanks.
